Travis J. Layfield was a history buff who used to watch films on World War II on the History Channel as a boy. His grandfather was a Navy Seabee, which may have influenced his decision to join the Navy ROTC in high school. He enlisted in the Marine Corps right after high school graduation.
Layfield had been enthusiastic about going to Iraq. "He always said he was excited to go," said Layfield's cousin Ashley Mills, "But you could see in his face, he was a little scared ... He always assured us he was ready to go and that he would come back."
Travis was a fine young man that stepped to the beat of his own drum. Since he was a child, he had always wanted to be a Marine.
Life Achievements/ Recognitions:
In June 2003, Travis signed his heart, body, and soul over to the Marine Corp. He was deployed to Kuwait on February 16, 2004, and then to Ramadi, Iraq in March 2004.
Father of a remarkable son.
LCpl Travis Layfield's awards include the Purple Heart Medal,Combat action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, SEA Service Deployment Ribbon and a Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
